The number of times I googled "how to write a blog".. well this my first attempt at writing, but the saving grace (for me and my readers) is, its about 'Terracotta'. Having been a terracotta jewelry artist for a good 5 years and continuing I have seen this art grow immensely, which is both good and bad. Good, as some of them emerge as astoundingly beautiful pieces, and bad as they can be repetitive; and being repetitive leads to boredom. But believe me when I say this, sometimes that thought itself is scary enough to help you create something distinctive, maybe even quirky.
The "refill twist in terracotta" - like the name suggests, is a method which is simple, and if done well the outcome will be truly splendid. It makes use of the nib of a pen refill to design a part or the whole piece. I am sure a lot of you would have done this on paper. 'Connect the dots and create the picture';well here its just a wet slab of terracotta that acts as your canvas. Once you outline the design with the dots really close to each other, they almost look like a line that flows to create a pattern. Innumerable little dots together that finally emerge as one intricate ornate design. But let me warn you, this can be tempting. Knowing when to stop is key. Overdo the dots, and you'll end up with a totally smudged design.
We look around and there is absolutely no dearth for inspirations. May it be a design on a simple sari, a dainty leaf, a mythological form, or just a view outside through your checkered grills. Zillions of little pixels close to each other that form the greater image and while they get transformed into beautiful patterns on a piece of clay. Something as malleable, that twists and turns at your finger tips, that is as porous as nature that soaks in gazillion colors, it brings about a lot of room for creativity, experimentation and self-interpretation that precedes more than any kind of acceptance.
Well this wasn't so bad I guess. Hope you like reading my posts and see me improve as I intend to write more.:)
